Evanoff addressed an issue with the Memphis population that most people don’t even recognize: the mentality of Memphis residents and outsiders is that the city is a dangerous, poverty-stricken, dirty place. And even more so, that it does not compare to the quality of life in the rest of the US. It was really interesting to see this perspective, because I think that it contributes to many of the cities problems. We discussed in the first couple days of class how the creative class rarely remains in the city and I think that this mentality is one of the main factors. Many people in the region see Memphis as an undesirable place to live. There are issues with Memphis, such as public transportation and poverty, but these issues are present in other cities as well. Though there are certainly exceptions, I don’t think that native Memphians have much pride for there city. There are some people who see Memphis as “up and coming” but even this mentality has flaws. Memphis has its strengths and those should be recognized. And the problems that the city has should be contextualized with the rest of the US, which is currently facing many similar problems.
